Personal Histories: Multicultural Memoirs

PHILADELPHIA: The Role of Micro-Enterprise in Kenya's Lewa Community

WIL of Greater Philadelphia—a non-profit focused on empowering women as leaders globally—has invited Seven Sisters alumni to learn about the journey and work of The Lewa Micro-enterprise Program. This program operates through the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya and serves a community of approximately 2,000 women across more than 15 communities in areas that surround the Lewa Conservancy. This is an exciting opportunity to see how women in our community have combined their talents to benefit women globally.

Class of 1959 Mini-Reunion

We will gather in the dining room of the Vagelos Alumnae Center for afternoon tea in a lovely intimate space giving us the chance to visit and catch up on all our news. High tea includes finger sandwiches, scones, fruit, and beverages. Then we will cross Broadway to the Miller Theatre for Tharp on Dance. Twyla Tharp’s informal presentation caps her year as Distinguished Guest Artist at Barnard College.

Panelists include Dara-Lynn Weiss, author of The Heavy, a memoir about helping her seven-year-old daughter lose weight, and the challenges of modern parenting, and Ann Engelland a physician at Barnard who specializes in adolescent and young adult issues.

Michal Lemberger  (Class of 1994) will be one of our speakers and who will discussing her then recently published book, After Abel.  After Abel is a powerful, frankly feminist reimagining that gives voice to silent, often marginalized women in the Hebrew Bible—stories of Eve, Lot’s wife, Miriam, Hagar, Zeresh, Yael, Penina, Michel, and Achsah.  Ms. Lemberger offers astute discourse about female agency and empowerment in the biblical world and today. Michal will be joined at the podium by Patty O'Sullivan ( Class of 1981) who is the co-owner and associate publisher at Prospect Park Books, a Southern California independent press, distributed to the trade by Consortium Book Sales and Distribution.

The Galapagos Islands: 8 Days of Wonder & Amazement

Designated the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, the Galapagos Islands have been described as a “unique living museum and showcase of evolution.” Undiscovered by Europeans until the 16th century, the Galapagos Islands hold a central position in modern history as the birthplace of the theory of evolution.
